Lake Bunyonyi -

The word Bunyonyi means a place of little birds. Indeed at Lake Bunyonyi you can enjoy at least 200 bird species. You will wake up to bird song. For the bird lovers, we organize an early morning boat trip to Nyombi, a swampy place across the lake that is home to many bird species. Lake Bunyonyi is a body of water 9km west from Kabale Town, in southwestern Uganda. It is 25 km long and 7 km wide, covering an area of 61 Sq.Km. The lake's altitude is 1,950 m, and it is surrounded by intensely cultivated terraced hills. The horizon is graced by the volcanoes that lie astride the border between Uganda, Rwanda and Congo. They are Muhavura (4,127 m) and Sabinyo (3,634 m). Lake Bunyonyi is one of the young lakes created less than 10,000 years ago by a volcanic eruption that blocked a river exit. It is the second deepest Lake in Africa. It has over 29 islands and the water is bilharzia free making it favorable for swimming. Thermal shock is a real danger as the waters can be chilly especially in July. Take care to cool your body by splashing yourself with water before plunging in the lake.
