Kidepo Valley National Park - It was declared a National Park in 1960 and encompasses 1,442 Sq.Km of magnificent rolling Savannah plains nestled within Nyangea Napore and Morungole Mountains and the Kidepo and Narus rivers. Located 700Km from Kampala in Karamoja's northern Kaabong District bordering Sudan and Kenya. Kidepo Valley is Uganda's most isolated Park but the few who make the long journey north through the wild frontier region of Karamoja would agree that it's also the most magnificent ; for Kidepo ranks among Africa's finest wildernesses.
It's a stunning Park boasting of a real sense of the wilderness that enchants visitors. Hills have been colonised by dry Mountain Forests while some water courses support Acacia forests.
Fact-File
Many of the hill tops are capped by rock Kopjes which provide habitats for Klipspringer and give panoramic 360 ° views. The Park contains one of the most exciting faunas of any Ugandan national Park with 86 mammal species present (26 occurring nowhere else in Uganda). Five species of primate are found in the Park including the endemic KAVIRONDO BUSH BABY. Localised carnivores include the bat-eared fox, stripped Hyena, Aardwolf, Caracal and Cheetah.
Most people bordering the Park are Karamajong a cattle keeping people who are adapting slowly to changes of their traditional way of life. Interested visitors (by arrangement) to visit Karamojong Manyattas (Homesteads) to see traditional customs, spears, stools, head dresses, Knives, bows and arrows and jewellery.
Activities

The extensive bird list is second to Elizabeth National Park. A few species of note at least in the Ugandan context are the Ostrich, KoriBustard, Secretary bird, Carmine, Little green, and Red throated bee eaters, Abyssinian ground hornbill, Abyssinian roller and Abyssinian scimitarbill, Yellowbilled and Jacksons hornbills and the Karamoja apalis. Kidepo is also notable for its of birds of prey. 14 species including Verreaux's eagle, Egyptian Vulture and pygmy falcon are believed to be endemic to the Kidepo and Karamoja region.
